What are the chances of a light skinned person with light red hair and freckles to get a tan after a sunburn?

I am white as a ghost with brown hair. Sunburns are very bad for you..(just have to post the warning) but...I never tan without getting a light sunburn. For me there is no happy medium. I have to recommend a spray tan (if you can afford it) because it is so much better (and looks better right away! No red fuss!)
