Why is it so hard to dye over black and red hair?

Look at it this way. If you have some cake icing that was white and you add one or two drops of color to it, it will change almost immediately.

If you have a dark color like deep red icing, you try one or two drops to lighten the deep red to a pink but nothing happnes.

You keep adding the drops until you get a pink and realize you have used the whole bottle of white.

Hair is very similar. I have really dark brown hair, its a few inches past my shoulders.

When I was dying my hair "Blonde" I did it myself and used two whole boxes and probally could have used a 3 one.

I colored one box at a time to help the lightening.

If you do this, do the underside first. That way it will lighten. If you don't it will turn a brownish=blonde, while the rest of your hair is blonde.

If you have any coloring mixture leftover then apply it to the top layer of hair. (not on the roots just yet).

Use other boxes as needed.

A word of wisdom - NEvER EVeR - Perm your hair after you color it. (Grins) this turns hair into wax! Yuck

So I hope this helps to answer your question; Why is it so hard to dye over black and red hair.

Why is it so hard to dye over black and red hair?

Don't every try and use a box to dye your hair lighter over dyed dark hair. I don't know why but it just doesnt have a good result. Such as going green.

Why is it so hard to dye over black and red hair?

Because in order to change a hair color that is already very deep it must be lightened first. Color { natural or not) over color simply creates a darker color. The pictures on hair color boxes are all based on applying the color to white hair!

Why is it so hard to dye over black and red hair?

because the colour is too dark especially if its natural. thats why you can go to bleach your hair which will make it blonde/white blonde, then u can die your hair to whatever colour you want. you can buy hair bleach at your local chemist.

youll have to go to a salon and get it stripped and possibly "chemically treated" i did the same thing happen to me

Why is it so hard to dye over black and red hair?

It is because they are darker colors and when you do dye them, your darker color will probably show through.Because if you use a lighter color against a darker color, they just don't mix.If you want to dye your hair, don't dye it yourself.Go to a salon. They are better than those hair dying boxes. The boxes are totally fake!

Why is it so hard to dye over black and red hair?

looks like you got some good answers you have to remove the color first and then use the color you want your local beauty supply should carry something to take the color out

but you can always go to the salon and get it done by some one who knows what she is doing

Why is it so hard to dye over black and red hair?

it takes more chemicals and bleach
